About: : A UX redesign of Spotify's mobile app, focused on streamlining content discovery and cleaning up redundant navigation across the Home, Search, and Artist pages.
Problem: Spotify offers strong discovery tools — carousels, a DJ feature, reels-style browsing — but the UI is organized confusingly, with several redundant pages and inconsistent sorting. The Home page's filter chips (All, Music, Podcasts, Audiobooks) duplicate what the dedicated Search tab already does, leaving Home without a clear purpose. Separately, the Artist page crowds all its information into one cluster and doesn't use swipe gestures, making navigation feel stiff.
Solo UX redesign — independently audited the existing app, identified navigation and discovery pain points, and redesigned the Home, Search, and Artist pages in Figma.
Research & Findings: Auditing the app's structure revealed three core issues:
Redundant Discovery — Home's filter chips and the Search tab both lead to nearly identical browsing pages, duplicating functionality.
Purposeless Home — Home shows only music (playlists, albums), leaving podcasts and audiobooks without a real presence, despite being core content types.
Cramped Artist Page — Artist details, tabs, and song lists are packed into one dense cluster, with no swipe gestures to ease navigation.
Move filter-chip discovery into the Search tab, freeing Home to serve its own purpose.
Rebuild Home around recently played and recommended content across music, podcasts, and audiobooks.
Redesign the Artist page with more breathing room, centered layout, and swipe-friendly tabs.
The redesign moves discovery into the Search tab: filter chips, browsing cards, and a new "What's New" tab, while Home is rebuilt to surface music, podcasts, and audiobooks together. The Artist page gets a centred, softer layout with combined Shuffle/Play controls and swipeable tabs. Home is also recentered in the navigation bar to support swipe gestures between tabs.
Spotify's Home page — the first screen users land on — has filter chips for All, Music, Podcasts, and Audiobooks, showing recently played content and new releases. But each filter tab doubles as its own discovery page, which conflicts with the dedicated Search tab, which offers the same browsing options plus Live Events. The goal: move discovery into Search, and let Home focus on being a true homepage — surfacing music, podcasts, and audiobooks together, while keeping light discovery features like New Releases.
Consolidated discovery into a single Search tab, freeing Home to surface music, podcasts, and audiobooks together. The Artist page gained a centred layout, swipeable tabs, and combined Shuffle/Play control — reducing navigation friction throughout. Full demo on Figma. ← Click to see
